Plant a Tree With ABD
Sororities are all about "giving back" and Good Vibes Sponsor Adam Block Design believes in the power of philanthropy as well. ABD has just launched a NEW eco-friendly philanthropy partnership that you are going to love. I interviewed Jenny Ruvalcaba, Marketing Manager at Adam Block Design, to find out more about the green tree project and what it means for their sorority clients!
🌳 GO GREEK. GO GREEN. 🌳
SS: What led ABD to a new GREEN philanthropy idea?
ABD: Many of us from the Adam Block Design team were involved in Greek Life while in college. We were fortunate to experience the amazing philanthropic work that Greek organizations are built upon. We decided that we would designate our own ABD philanthropy just like the sororities and fraternities we work with. We wanted to honor the amazing work that our clients do for the world and to highlight a very important side of Greek life that often gets overlooked. That lead us to selecting the highly respected international non-profit Trees for the Future as our primary charity of choice.
And we also wanted our sorority and fraternity clients to be actively involved in our new endeavor. The plan is simple. When your chapter orders t-shirts, we plant a tree. When you order sweatshirts, we plant a tree. When you order yoga pants, hoodies, totes and tank tops, we will plant four trees! Every order = a fresh green tree grows in an underdeveloped part of the world.
SS: What makes Trees for the Future such a worthwhile non-profit?
ABD: Trees for the Future provides training and materials to local farmers in underdeveloped parts of the world. The trees they plant not only have environmental benefits, but they also provide families with sustainable food sources, livestock feed, products to sell, and up to a 500% increase in their annual income.
In addition, Trees for the Future works to specifically empower women by teaching them sustainable farming techniques, so they can help feed their families. Altogether, we felt that this was a good fit for the values we hold as a company.
SS: Why the emphasis on trees?
ABD: Here are 10 reasons why Adam Block Design chose to plant a tree with every order!
- Trees absorb dangerous gases from the atmosphere.
- Trees replenish the atmosphere with oxygen.
- Trees permanently increase the income of poor farmers.
- Planting trees reverses environmental degradation.
- Trees help families become self-sufficient.
- Trees fight deforestation by putting less pressure on forests.
- Trees help renew & regenerate over-harvested land.
- Trees stabilize soil and prevent wind and soil erosion.
- Trees lower air temperature and help combat climate change.
- Planting trees restores biodiversity.
SS: Is Adam Block Design eco-friendly in other ways?
ABD: YES! We are constantly making strides to be more eco-friendly. At ABD we do the following:
🌿 Print with optional water-based inks. Optional water-based inks produce ultra-soft prints and are the most eco-friendly inks available. This option is used by chapters with a desire to remain green and those who want a soft-to-the-hand feel. If you truly want green apparel, water-based ink is the way to go.
🌿 Use biodegradable organic solvents. In place of cheaper, hazardous mineral spirits, we only use 100% biodegradable, organic solvent for reclamation and breakdown of our screens.
🌿 Offer eco-friendly apparel. ABD has a wide variety of garment options that are eco-friendly, like 100% Organic Cotton and Bamboo-constructed styles!
🌿 Use recycled shipping boxes. All of our shipping boxes are produced with at least 90% recycled material, and the content is from Responsibly Forested sources. These boxes are warehoused by the truckload, reducing our semi-truck deliveries significantly. Whenever possible, vendor boxes are reused in order to minimize the need for new boxes. Please let us know if you'd like us to ship your order in a reused box.
🌿 Keep paper usage and waste to a minimum. To reduce paper use, we recycle all paper trimmings, unused paper products and press runs that do not meet our high quality standards. Also, our computer-based production system keeps our paper usage to a minimum. To reduce landfill waste we regularly distribute ink to our presses via 55 gallon drums, as opposed to the standard five pound cans.
SS: How do you see ABD's new GREEN philosophy making a positive impact?
ABD: Our vision as a company is to design a more beautiful world. In the beginning, this vision referred to creating awesome Greek designs, but now we're expanding our message in the hopes that we can set an example for other companies while also doing something good for the world. We take our corporate responsibility very seriously.
SS: In addition to planting trees, does ABD give to their sorority client's charities as well?
ABD: The main way we get involved with Greek philanthropies comes in the form of our IndieLink ordering option. When we use this option, we open a temporary link and allow individual members of a group to pay for their own order. We’re excited to give discounts on IndieLink orders so that a lot of money can be raised for a sorority's philanthropy.
