♦ RECRUITMENT STYLE GUIDE

Every PNMs asks, “What should I wear for recruitment?” Clothing requirements vary from school to school, so always check with the fashion guidelines provided by your Panhellenic council. There will be a dress code for each day of formal rush. Recruitment starts out casual and gets increasingly dressy as the week goes on.

sorority sugar has created this “RUSHWEAR” style guide for ideas, inspiration and preferred shopping links. Please use these fashions as a template for the kinds of looks both sorority girls and potential new members will be wearing. The order of the rounds vary at each college, but in general, these are examples of appropriate apparel to wear for a fall {and spring} formal recruitment!

The "Get the Look" Links provided are for shops that offer sorority styles at affordable prices. sorority sugar is very sweet on sorority savings! Most pieces are well under $200. You can spend a fortune on designer apparel, accessories and jewelry for recruitment. But if you're on a budget, you can still look fabulous and not drain your family's bank account. sorority sugar is crazy about shopping smart, getting classic looks "for less" and selecting rushwear fashions that flatter every PNM. These are all my FAVE picks for future sorority girls. Please scroll down to the Fashion, Jewelry & Shoes Shopping Guide for more perfect picks and links!

🎀 Orientation 🎀

Most formal recruitment weeks start out with a group orientation where all the PNMs learn about the process and meet their Rho Gamma/Gamma Chi recruitment counselors. This first meeting requires casual attire. Even though it’s very relaxed, you still want to look ‘nice-casual.’ No heavily torn shorts or wrinkled tee shirts. Denim shorts are ok, if they're not too ragged or too skimpy. Casual shorts, skirts, and sundresses are perfect for Orientation.

🎀  Shoes 🎀

All casual shorts, skirts and dresses should be worn with sandals, flats, or a lower wedge. Formal recruitment involves a lot of walking and standing. Save your feet and your sanity by wearing comfortable flats or low heels early in the week. There will be time to wear high heels during the last two rounds.

🎀 Jewelry 🎀

For each round of recruitment keep jewelry classic and simple. 'Less is more' when it comes to jewels during rush week. Charming sparkle should accent your appearance without overshadowing your personality. A pair of pretty earrings, a necklace and one ring is more than enough jewelry for a PNM.

🎀 ROUND ONE 🎀

Usually the first round of recruitment is the “sundress round.” Sometimes this round is called "ice water teas." PNMs will visit each sorority house on campus. Wear an attractive summer dress that feels good, looks good and lets your personality shine. A cute summer skirt and top is also an option for this relaxed, casual round. Snappy shorts and a cute top are also traditional at some schools for round one.

Avoid a totally bare back, plunging necklines, cut-outs and super short hemlines. And make sure you have the correct bra and panties for a sundress with skinny straps. Shoes should be sandals, ballet flats, low heels or wedges.

🎀 ROUND TWO 🎀

Many panhellenics supply a special recruitment tee shirt for PNMs to wear during one round of rush. This could be the first or second day. Often times it's worn during the philanthropy round. Wearing a solid-colored pair of shorts will compliment most sporty recruitment tee shirts. Wear sandals, ballet flats, or boat shoes with your shorts and tee shirt. Accent with simple jewelry.

If shorts and a panhellenic tee are not worn this day, then round two can be another sundress or an attractive shorts and shirt outfit. Follow the guidelines published by your panhellenic.

🎀  ROUND THREE 🎀

For the third round, PNMs will be asked to wear a dressier daytime dress. This round may feature sorority skits, philanthropy, or house tours. Sometimes the attire is described as "business casual" or "date night fashion."  This means a dress that is fancier than a sundress, but not as elegant as a cocktail dress. Think about what you would wear to a luncheon, job interview, dinner at an upscale restaurant, or a graduation ceremony. Wear shoes that look appropriate with a nicer dress. For example - strappy sandals, wedges, nude pumps or peep toe heels. Make sure your heels are relatively comfortable and not too high.

🎀 ROUND FOUR 🎀

The dressiest round of recruitment is preference night! Preference calls for a dressy dress that would be worn to a wedding reception, a holiday party, or an elegant restaurant. The frock should not be too revealing or too sparkly. Preference is not a night club or a prom. Please no plunging necklines, cut-outs, backless, or mini skirts. Nude pumps, strappy high heeled sandals, or dressy wedges may be worn. Avoid wearing solid black or solid white apparel, since the sorority members are very likely to be dressed in those colors. As a PNM, you want to stand out in the room, not blend in with all the sorority sisters in a sea of black.

🎀 BID DAY 🎀

On most campuses bid day is another casual day like day one. New members are asked to wear shorts and a tank top. The tank top is worn because the new pledges will be given a bid day tee shirt to slip on over the tank. Don’t wear a fluffy blouse or a baggy tee shirt. White, khaki, or solid-colored shorts are best. Some schools have a special bid day tradition of wearing white dresses. Be sure to follow the specific instructions at your college.

♦ Cold Weather Rushwear

“Spring” recruitment which is in the dead of winter, can be a little tricky and it's usually very cold outside. The nice dress days stay the same. For example, you would still wear an interview type dress for the round preceding preference (Round Three) and a cocktail dress for pref night. Substitute short or long sleeves for the summery styles of an August recruitment. Keep warm by wearing a nice coat or classy cardigan.

🎀 First & Second Rounds 🎀

The casual earlier rounds call for nice jeans, pants, or dresses/skirts with boots, loafers or flats. For example, a sweater dress with boots would be cute. Or sharp jeans (not torn or faded) with boots and a blazer or cardigan. Layering can make casual clothes look dressier but still feel “at ease.” A signature sweater and pants is appropriate for the early rounds as well. Add a statement necklace, or a strand of pearls, and you have a casual ~ yet little-bit-dressier look.

♦ More January Rushwear Tips

  • Instead of shorts ~ nice jeans (darker denim looks crisper than faded light blue), colored jeans, khaki, grey, navy, or black pants.
  • Instead of sundresses ~ sweaters, cardigans, blouses, long sleeve shirts, sweater dresses, long sleeve wrap dresses, plaid or patterned skirts. Gameday style shift dresses with sleeves are an ideal look. A chevron skirt with a classic cable sweater, tights and ballet flats looks really cute.
  • Instead of sandals ~ leather boots, loafers, ankle boots and flats. Wear opaque tights with skirts and dresses if it’s too cold for bare legs.
